Tākina is located in Wellington CBD’s cultural precinct, within easy walking distance of key transport links, entertainment, dining options and thousands of accommodation options.
Wellington is ideally located in the middle of New Zealand, providing easy access via air, road, rail or even ferry. Wellington Airport is a hub for domestic and international visitors and only a short direct flight from Australia’s east coast.
The trip from the airport to the city only takes 15 minutes and likely to be the longest commute visitors will have during their stay in Wellington.

On Foot
Travel times from Tākina:
By Bus
Most Wellington buses (including those from the airport and railway station) stop along Courtenay Place and Willis Street. From these stops, it’s just a few minute’s walk to Tākina. You can search bus timetables via Metlink's website.
Private Coach or Bus
Tākina coach pick up and drop off occurs on Cable Street either by the front entrance of Te Papa (drop off only) or in the designated bus lane outside Te Papa.
By Bike
The waterfront area around Tākina is bicycle friendly. However, please do not bring them inside the building, instead park your bike at the public bike racks on Wakefield street – found outside the U Residence Hotel.
By Train
From Wellington Railway Station it’s a 20-minute walk to Tākina. Alternatively, you can catch a bus, Uber or taxi nearby. You can search train timetables via Metlink's website.
By Taxi
Wellington Combined Taxis have a stand outside Te Papa. You then cross the road at the designated crossing and come in the Cable Street entrance to Tākina.
By Car
Take the Aotea Quay exit when driving south into central Wellington along the SH1 motorway. Continue along Waterloo, Customhouse and Jervois Quays, which lead directly into Cable Street and Te Papa’s convenient car park.
By Plane
Getting to Tākina from Wellington Airport couldn’t be easier than hopping in a taxi or Uber. Both are available just outside the airport’s arrival terminal.
Parking
Te Papa has parking spaces and a height restriction of 2.2 m applies for its covered spaces.
Wellington City Council’s Barnett Street car park has parking spaces along within Century City, which has a 2m height restriction on its covered parking and Reading on Wakefield car park has uncovered parking spaces only.
